Professor Simon Marginson

Biography

Simon Marginson holds a Personal Chair in Education at Monash University, and is an Australian Professorial Fellow (APF), the first APF in the field of Education. He has worked at Monash since July 1998 and is now Director of the Monash Centre for Research in International Education in the Faculty of Education. His current research and writing projects are concerned with higher education, and comparative and international education, in the context of globalization, economic and cultural globalisation. His APF program of work 'The Enterprise University in the Global Environment' is focused on the research-intensive university and its future trajectories in a networked global environment. Professor Marginson is a frequent public commentator on economic and education policy and has conducted Australian Research Council-funded projects continuously since 1993. His books include 'Markets in Education' (Allen and Unwin 1997) from his doctoral thesis, awarded the Chancellor's Prize at the University of Melbourne; and 'The Enterprise University' (Cambridge University Press 2000, with Mark Considine) which won the 2001 American Educational Research Association publications award for publications on post-secondary education. An article with Marcela Mollis on theory and method in comparative education, in the global context, achieved the George Z. F. Bereday award from the Comparative and International Education Society, for the article in Comparative Education Review that did most to advance the field of comparative education in 2001. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia, a Fellow of the Australian College of Education, Editor of the Australian Journal of Education, and chairs the International Forum of the Association for Studies in Higher Education (ASHE) in the U.S.A. He is also a member of El Seminario de Educacion Superior de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (the National University of Mexico, Mexico City).
